Defect in muscle: A diaphragmatic hernia is a hole in the diaphragm muscle or lack of formation of the muscle. This allows abdominal organs to move into the chest cavity. This hinders formation and growth of the lungs. Ventilator support may be required then surgery.

Maybe big deal: Congenital diaphragm hernia discovered in utero can range from a small hernia with no consequences, to a large hernia preventing lung development that is associated with a high risk of death at birth. Treatment obviously depends on the severity of the condition. You may want to see a pediatric surgeon for a consultation if the seriousness or plan is not clear to you. I hope everything turns out ok.
