Depends: Bun, or blood urea nitrogen, is the byproduct of normal protein breakdown and conversion to urea by the liver. BUN is excreted by the kidney. So BUN can be up or down depending on the synthesis by the liver or excretion by the kidney. In sudden liver failure, e.g. Acute liver failure, BUN is low, since urea synthesis by the liver is reduced, but if the kidneys do not work, BUN will go up.
