Mood swings: Your child should be evaluated by a neurologist to rule out any other disorders of mood. The child being scared in sleep could be night terrors but if he has it while being awake, he needs ot be evaluated by a pediatric psychiatrist as well.

Seek a diagnosis 1st: By taking videos of his atypical behaviors to his pede, who may refer him to a neurologist, psychologist, psychiatrist or developmental/behavioral pede. They'll need a 3-generation family history of medical & mental illnesseses. At 3, anxiety & autistic spectrum disorders are more common than bipolar disorder, psychosis or temporal lobe seizures. Diagnosis will direct therapy & other treatments.
