What should do about an itchy bum?

What part of the bum: Itching on the skin of the butt (bum) can be due to dryness, sensitive skin, scratchy clothes, sitting on scratchy surfaces, etc... A non-medicated skin cream, Hydrocortisone 1% cream (for just a few days), or another anti-itch cream can help (all over-the-counter). If there is a visible rash, or if the itch is anal, genital, or in hairy areas, a doctor can give a diagnosis and start treatment.

Pruritis ani: Try less vigorous wiping after a bowel movement. Finish cleaning with a product like balneol. Then apply a mild cortisone cream your pharmacist can recommend. If not improved have a proctologist check for perianal dermatitis, fissures, hemorrhoids,or pinworms.
