Expandable metal...: Usually, in carotid stenting, a self-expanding stent made of nitinol is used. Nitinol is unusual in that it changes shape and size depending on the temperature at which it is in. So it may be 0.5 mm at room temperature and 10 mm in the carotid. A stent pushes plaque to the sides and opens up the artery to let blood through. This can be used to prevent a stroke.

Fixing it open: Carotid stenting is putting a wire cage inside a carotid artery after the artery, which was narrowed by disease, was opened with a balloon catheter. Once opened, to prevent the artery from narrowing again, a metal cage is release by the same balloon that opened up the artery to hold the artery open.

Stent: Placent in carotid artery is a safe procedure if the doctor has a lot of experience. The catheter enters at the groin. The carotid stenosis is crossed and a small umbrella shaped protection device is deployed. The stent is placed and expanded to size with a balloon. Completion images taken. Devices removed. All finished. See radiologyinfo. For good info.
