Diagnostic tool: Dental x-rays are also commonly called radiographs. They can be the traditional film based type or the newer digital versions. Dentists use radiographs for many reasons: to find and evaluate hidden dental and bony structures, malignant or benign masses, to assess bone loss in periodontal disease, and to ifentify cavities.

Images through teeth: X-rays use radiation of very short wavelength. Their penetrating nature allows one to see inside hard structures. Dental x-rays use either special film or digital sensors to capture images of the teeth and supporting bone(gums show up poorly) that represent the differing densities of the various structures. This allows unhealthy areas(cavities in teeth, infections in bone) to be detected.

A dental x-ray is a 2 dimensional representation of a 3 dimensional object. It allows dentists not look into, around, and through tissues, increasing diagnostic knowledge. Radiation exposure is infinitesimally small. X-rays allow Dentist to treat without having to guess.
