May be bursa: Hip pain is usually in the groin or referred to the buttock area. Outer thigh pain is often from bursitis. A bursa is a fluid filled sack that acts as a shock absorber. The trochanteric bursa is located at the upper outer thigh and often gets inflamed. Hip pain sometimes is referred from a pinched nerve in your lower back. Consider seeing a physiatrist or sports medicine doctor.
