Broken vessel: The conjunctiva lines the surface of the eye and inside of the eyelids. There is a potential space between the conj. And the eye that can be filled with fluid, such as blood, if a superficial vessel of the conj. Breaks. This can look dramatically red. Commonly, this happens overnight spontaneously. Coughing, straining, sneezing, and rubbing are also causes. Blood thinners can make it worse.
