A synthetic estrogen: It was mistakenly used in the past (until 1971 in the us) to prevent miscarriages and premature delivery. It was later recognized to increase the risk iof certain cancers in mothers and babies exposed to it, as well as causing abnormal development of sexual organs in some exposed babies.
