Skin around nipples.: The areolae (plural of areola) are the zones of pigmentated skin that surround the nipples. They tend to enlarge as the breast enlarges, so are usually larger in women. The female areola tends to be more circular and more centrally placed on the breast, while the male areola is often oval and more often lateral on the breast. The nipple is the raised area in the center of the areola.
