Whats the chance of dying from sickle cell disease before reaching puberty?

Low: A well managed, well controlled sickle cell disease patient should have a live expentancy past their 5th decade of life. This is obviously in patients/children that are receiving the specialized and up-to-date medical care they need. Complications and early mortality is a possibility, but so it is dying in a car accident or getting the flu.

Depends on care: Children with sickle cell disease are now put on daily penicillin which helps toprevent life-threatening infections. They are also sometimes given the Pneumovax vaccinations which prevents infection with a potentially fatal bacterial infection. Good nutrition, appropriate hydration, prompt treatment of infections and "crise" all help them stay healthier and live longer and better.
