Donor and rejection: Given a suitable recipient, finding a compatible donor is the primary barrier. Technically, a heart transplant is not a difficult procedure. Preventing rejection and minimizing the complications of anti-rejection/immunosuppressive drugs and long-term surveillance for infections and malignancies are longer term concerns. Limitations of finding donors has has spurred mechanical alternatives.

Recovery: This is an excellent operation . It is a long wait before you get one. The recovery is similar to any other major heart operation. But there are always problems related to anti rejection drugs. Rejection and infection are serious complications after any transplant early. Late after transplant cancer is the third complication.
