Internal under the skin with wire in the heart, implantable cardioverter-defibrillators work by detecting and stopping abnormal heartbeats. An implantable cardioverter-defibrillator continuously monitors your heartbeat and delivers extra beats or electrical shocks to restore a normal heart rhythm.
