Melasma?: Melasma of the face is often in a butterfly pattern but may be spotty. If you only have one spot and it is growing, you need to see a dermatologist and get a biopsy.

Hormone related...: Melasma, chloasma, and the "mask of pregnancy" are all terms for facial pigmentation that is increased by the use of estrogen (in pregnancy, of course, the estrogen comes from the placenta).
