Is 64 pounds a lot for a 9 year old? i think my daughter is over weight.

We : We now assess a child's weight by using their bmi - body mass index. You need to know your child's height. Search online for a 'childhood bmi calculator' and enter her data - height, weight, age and gender. It will also tell you what percentile that calculated bmi number puts her in. If her bmi is over the 85th percentile then she would be considered overweight. If her bmi is over the 95th percentile then she is considered obese. Higher percentiles in childhood are correlated with higher risks of high blood pressure and diabetes in adulthood. I applaud you for being concerned. Start in childhood to develop good eating habits and exercise. She will have a hard time later breaking all her learned habits from childhood if she is overweight. Set a good example for your child by having a household that has healthy eating habits. Children most often eat just like their parents. Choosemyplate.Gov is a great site for assessing your child's weight and bmi.
