If : If your period is lighter in amount or a darker color, then taking a pregnancy test is reasonable and may put your mind at rest. If you have discharge, then contact your physician for an evaluation. You may want to consider starting an oral contraceptive or an implantable form of birth control like Implanon or mirena, (levonorgestrel) but the only way to prevent infection is using a condom.
