Heavy clotting during a period can be caused by dysfunctional uterine bleeding, where basically there is a hormonal imbalance caused by a variety of things including stress on the body, other factors, or even weight changes (too high or too low); if there is any chance a patient could have been pregnant then heavy clotting can represent a miscarriage; or it can be caused by changes in the uterus or cervix. I don't know your age or other issues about you. If this continues, if you think you could have been pregnant, or if you have light-headedness/fainting then you will have to be seen by your doctor immediately. Also please be sure that your pap smear is up to date.
