Stage and histology: Prognosis of lung cancer is contingent on the stage and size. There are IV stages of lung cancer, with stage i having the best prognosis, then stage II and so forth. Also histology or type of lung cancer is important. Non small cell has better prognosis than small cell. Also certain specific types, such as typical carcinoid have excellent prognosis.

Bronchoalveolar has: The least tendency to metastasize (travel), but tantalizes surrgeons because it seems cured, and can pop up later. It has the best prognosis for surviving for 5 years, but it's because it commonly grows slowly not becuase doctors' interventions produce the desired effect. Also, new biologic markers (egfr) and mutations may indicate response to drugs.
