Who do i see if my period lasts for 3 weeks? is this an emergency room situation? i'm asking this on behalf of my girl friend since she doesn't know who to turn to for immediate help, and because of the financial situation, she doesn't want to go to the h

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Unless : Unless she is bleeding profusely, has a fever or is in severe pain, a trip to the emergency room is not necessarily needed. She should give her ob/gyne doctor a call as soon as possible for an evaluation. If she is pre-menopausal, there are many causes for vaginal bleeding not related to her period such as: - iud or Depo Provera (medroxyprogesterone) use - stopping or starting birth control pills containing estrogen - stress - hormone problems such as with the thyroid - injury/trauma of the vagina from intercourse or a sexually transmitted disease - uterine fibroids or polyps - cervical injury, infection or rarely, cancer - pregnancy (implantation bleeding).
