Open heart surgery: Repair of truncus arteriosus is a complicated procedure, because the aorta and pulmonary artery did not separate during development. A patch is placed to close the communication between the right and left ventricle. The pulmonary arteries are taken off of the aorta and a new tube graft is placed into the right ventricle and connected to the pulmonary arteries to restore a normal circulation.

Cardiac surgery: The truncus arteriosus is when one vessel leaves the heart instead of two. Cardiac surgery usually follows next steps: separating the pulmonary arteries from the main truncus (the truncus will remain as the first part of the aorta); closure of the ventricular septal defect using a patch; creating a connection between the right ventricle and the pulmonary arteries using a valved conduit.
