Herpes : Herpes simplex virus causes painful ulcers, human papilloma virus (hpv) causes warts. The other thing to consider is that everyone has a row of big bumpy-wart looking tastebuds for bitter tastes across the backs of their tongues. (check out the picture i attached below.) you don't usually see them on other people because you have to open your mouth pretty wide to notice them. Tongue papillae?: Most people who believe they have warts on the back of the tongue are observing their normal circumvallate papillae. These are prominant taste buds, each about 2-3 mm (1/8") diameter, in a line across the back of the tongue; you can google for photos. If still in doubt, check with your doctor or dentist.
