HCC evaluation: AFP = Alpha fetoprotein is a test that can be used to evaluate for hepatocellular carcinoma (hcc). It is also elevated in some germ cell tumors. AFP "screening" is generally reserved for those with liver disease such as cirrhosis which may be from alcohol or other liver toxins.

To test for cancer: If you have a lump on a testicle (if you’re a man), elevated AFP can mean a cancer of the testicle is present. It is also used to “look” for early liver cancer in people with chronic hepatitis and/or cirrhosis of the liver.
