Hard 2 answer in 400: Cancer is when our own cells overgrow & spread into places in the body they don't belong. There is no single "silver bullet" because cancer cells are very similar to their normal neighbors & because there are many things that can go wrong in a cell to turn it cancerous. It is named after a crab due to its tenacious nature and the way some tumors look. Cancer have been found in mummies and fossils!

Predates humanity: Animals get cancer, even sharks. Hippocrates called it "karkinos" for "crab" and galen gave it the latin name "cancer", crab. It results from accumulated mutations that destabilize the genome, and it is inevitable in multicellular organisms that live long enough because of the nature of life itself. We do cure a majority of cancers nowadays but will probably never restabilize a genome itself.
