Rectal : Rectal prolapse in children usually occurs between the ages of 9 months and 3 years and usually resolves by the time the child is 6 years old. Typically it can be treated at home with stoll softeners and a high fiber diet. If the prolapse occurs at home, push it back in as soon as possible with a disposible glave and lubricating jelly. Applying an ice pack can help decrease the swelling and make pushing it in a little easier. Prolapses that are caused by underlying disorders such as cystic fibrosis or hirschprung's or those that cannot be fixed at home may require additional treatment such as a sclerosent injection or surgery. If your child has a prolapsed rectum that is causing pain and cannot be reduced, he may need to go to the emergency room.
