Protein in the urine: Nephrosis, or nephrotic syndrome, happens when the kidenys are damaged resulting in proteinuria, or a large amount of protein present in the urine. Nephritis, or nephritic syndrome is an inflammatory process in the kidneys and does not cause significant proteinuria.

Nephrosis is a degenerative disease, usually of a specific part of the kidney called the renal tubule. A nephrosis is generally thought of as any kidney disease that is non-inflammatory.
