USUALLY BAD: Typical means that you are bleeding some where like a stomach ulcer. Also iron can cause the stool to be black or tarry and maybe other foods. But if you are not on iron then maybe need to check about the ulcer.

Melena?: If it is black, sticky and malodorous that could represent gastrointestinal bleeding and would warrant prompt medical evalation. Some medications like peptobismal can lead to black stool as well.
