Topical steroids: The easiest way to quiet down a contact dermatitis regardless of the cause is by using a topical steroid. They can be gotten over the counter without a prescription, specifically Hydrocortisone either 1 or 2.5%. If the rash is too extensive or involves the face or genitals then an oral steroid like Prednisone can be prescribed. More potent topical steroids are also available by prescription.
