Lots of ways: Pitocin (oxytocin) is a medication that mimics a hormone in your body to start contractions. Cervidil and Cytotec are prostaglandins that soften the cervix and may start some contractions that are used when your cervix is less open. Some doctors use a catheter that manually opens the cervix a little as well. It depends on why you are being induced and how your cervix is to start.
