Big difference.: Rheumatoid arthritis is but one of over 100 types of arthritis. Most are inflammatory and need management by a rheumatology specialist. But the term generically applies to degenerative arthritis, with minimal inflammation, or tendon issues, i.e. a rotator cuff that may be mechanical in origin-impingement syndrome, yet be called "shoulder arthritis."
