What are the numbers on prescription glasses?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

The power: Generally an eyeglass rx is written as follows: first right eye (may be abbreviated as od) then left eye (os). The prescription for each eye is written as sphere cylinder (including axis) then add. Sphere is either a plus number - (far sighted) or minus (near sighted). Cylinder is correction of astigmatism - a distortion like a funhouse mirror. It has direction - hence the axis - or direction.
