Reduce WBC: Azathioprin (imuran) lowers the white blood cell (WBC) count. Wbcs are part of the immune system that fight infection, but also cause inflammation of crohn's, colitis, etc. The goal of Imuran (azathioprine) is to lower the WBC enough to stop the inflammation, but not enough to result in serious infections. That is why routine blood work monitoring is important.
