Lots of things!: Swelling can be due to water retention, infection, gravity, trauma, allergic reaction, even athlete's foot. If it's just one toe, consider infection, ingrown toenail, or local trauma. If it's all 10 toes and does not go away with elevation overnight, see your doctor to investigate water retention or other systemic causes.

If ALL your toes are: Swollen, chances are it's not a foot problem, but a problem in retaining fluid. The only reason the fluid collects in the toes is because of gravity. If you stood on your head all day, your head would swell. The 4 most common causes of fluid retention are heart, lung, liver & kidney. It's important to find out the cause before treatment can be made.
