Scars usually heal : Scars are a normal consequence of injury, and usually heal without extra help. Several things encourage scars to heal optimally. One is to tape the area for several weeks after surgery, another is to minimize pulling and motion of the area. Some scar creams may help but most don't make it any better than it would have been without, because scars "remodel" and improve naturally over several months.

Time: Scars mature and can continue to improve for up to a year. They are sun-sensitive and may become hyperpigmented with sun exposure. The best way to treat a scar depends on the scar. Options include silicone gel, silicone sheeting, use of filler (for spot or crater-like scars), laser therapy, hydroquinone, dermabrasion, or kenalog (triamcinolone) injection, or surgical scar revision.
