Widespread effects: These are a group of recessively inherited metabolic storage disorders caused by defective breakdown of long chains of sugar-like carbohydrates called glycosaminoglycans that build up in bone, cartilage, tendons, corneas, skin and connective tissue. Unfortunately they deposit in brain resulting in variable delays in development. Enzyme replacement therapy is in development and has some promise.
