Weeks to months: A broken ankle can take a variable amount of time to heal. There are a number if things that factor into how long it will take and how long swelling will take to resolve. One of the most important is what type of fracture you have.

Bone healing swells: When an injury involves bone, it can take months. The older we get, the longer it lasts. It generally takes a bone 6 weeks to heal. This is the main part of healing. From then on, the bone can take up to one year to remodel itself to completion. Physical therapy seems to speed up the process using various techniques.
