Prostaglandins: The pain of menstrual cramps is experienced due to a hormone called prostaglandins. These hormones work to stimulate the muscular contractions necessary for shedding the uterine lining. These hormones can cause powerful contractions when they cut the blood supply to the uterus, leading to a lack of oxygen to the related muscles. The pain however comes and goes throughout the cycle.
