Incidental finding: Streptococcal pharyngitis, so called strep throat, is often caused by group a streptococci. Group c and g strep are occasionally implicated.

They go together: Streptococcus is divided into different groups, labelled a, b, c etc. They are further subdivided into Alpha hemolytic or beta hemolytic. The most common one that we are concerned with is group a, beta hemolytic. However we often just shorten this mouthful to strep b. If you have this you can get the usual symptoms of strep throat: fever, sore throat, white patches on your tonsils, etc.
