A member asked:

My friend quit smoking meth 2 months before giving birth and only used meth 3 or 4 times during her pregnancy, will it show up in her baby if they test?

Meth in pregnancy: The damage by methamphetamine to a developing baby during pregnancy is unpredictable and potentially serious. Additionally it is essential for the baby's well being for mom to stay in sobriety. I would urge you to do all you can to persuade your friend to get professional help to stay drug free.

Can show up in poo: If they suspect drug use & send the meconium ( the first black tarry stools) meth use during the previous several months will show positive on testing. If she ha cleaned up her act & doesn't show up on a child services watch list, they may see no reason to test.

Her baby is at risk: For developmental, behavioral & growth problems from prenatal exposure to "meth." meth constricts blood vessels in mom, placenta & fetus, reducing blood flow & oxygen. Her baby may be affected whether or not brain imaging shows "strokes." encourage her to tell her OB now to get help & support for her mental illness, addiction & the challenges of parenting a child with fetal drug effect.
