Infections/trauma: Eardrum damage/perforation is typically due to chronic ear infections or trauma which can lead to hearing loss as well as other symptoms. Typically a ruptured eardrum can heal in the first few weeks. It can take months or it can not heal at all and require a surgery to repair. Most heal on their own. The most important thing is to have a specialist follow you closely to see how it is healing.

Many causes: The most common reason that the eardrum gets damaged is from q-tips. Other causes include sound pressure having the ear hit or struck or from infection. In most cases the eardrum will heal without consequence if it stays clean and dry. Rarely we need to operate to close a hole.
