How long does it take for hiv to show up on a test after you've contracted it?

Depends: There are two types of tests - one is to detect body's response by detecting antibodies to the HIV virus. This test may take a little while to become positive (1-2 months). Occasionally, it may take up to 3 months to get a positive HIV antibody test. The other option is to determine the presence of an HIV test particle in the blood. This test may become positive in a matter of days.

Depends on the test: The older third generation HIV screening test did not show HIV for 2 to 8 weeks (average 25 days). The fourth generation tests which were just approved in the usa this year can detect HIV in 11 days to 1month after infection.
