A lot of things: The knee have a lot of structure inside and out side to be injured, ligament, cartilage meniscus, all of this dose not show on the x-ray. Beside when x-ray is normal dose not means no fracture. So to second stage of MRI to the knee if pain persist.

Rec MRI: If pain is persistent, MRI would be helpful. It can show many things that cannot be seen with xray. Xray is mainly good for bone and or significant arthritis. Several soft tissue structure in the knee are best evaluated with mri.
