When is a hymenectomy done?

Several reasons: Hymenectomy can be done when one has an imperforate hymen (closed or fused). It also can be done when hymen hypertrophy is present to prevent bleeding. It is done under general anesthesia. Usually as an outpatient procedure.

Rarely: Correctly it is a hymenotomy. It is required when the hymen is imperforate or fused.

If abnormal: If hymen is imperforate it will allow mebnses to flow instead of backing up and causing intense abdominal pain with each cycle. In the event of hypertrophy it can prevent bleeding from laceration of the labial artery during intercourse.
