What do you do when a person has a spinal injury?

4 doctors weighed in across 2 answers

Protect the spine: Emergency medical technicians (emt) are trained to protect the spine by mininimizing movement (using a neck collar and a back board). This decreases movement that could injure the spinal cord and nerves to and from it. If someone has an accident and complains of neck or back pain, do not move them unless that would endanger them. Call 911 and emts can assess and protect the person.
