Need EEG: Staring is common in children. The way to diagnose petit mal epilepsy is a sleep deprived EEG with hyperventilation. Seizures can be brought out with drowsiness and hyperventilation is a common trigger for petit mal seizures. The EEG will record any electrical abnormalities that may occur.
