Heart or leg: There are two kinds of embolus, venous and arterial. A venous embolism usually comes from a blood clot in the leg or pelvis which breaks loose and travels to the lung ( pulmonary embolism). Arterial embolism is usually from a blood clot in the heart that breaks off and travels to the leg or arm, causing an abrupt cutoff of blood flow, or even to the brain to cause a stroke.
