No ingrown hair: There is no ingrown hair per se. It's a misconception that people feed on. What you have is inflammation of the hair folicule (sac) that is known as boil or medically as forunculitis. Why you get it is a good question. It indicates that local immune response is impaired. That can be seen in people with diabetes, psoriasis, or other systemic or local causes. Often no cause can be determined.

Hair grows into skin: While ingrown hair most commonly appears in areas where the skin is shaved or waxed, it can appear anywhere. Anything which causes the hair to be cut off or broken off with a sharp tip can cause ingrown hairs. Shaving is the leading cause, but waxing and tight clothing can also cause ingrown hairs. The hair curls back or grows sideways into the skin, and happens more so in people with curly hair.
