A lot of things: Erectile functioning is dependent on multiple systems in our bodies coordinating to facilitate dilation of the erectile chambers of the penis, called the corpora cavernosa. This includes an intact central and peripheral nervous system, arteries and veins. Medications are a cause of impotence. Depression can present as ed too. A patient with ed should see a urologist for a complete workup.
