The eyes have it.: Let your symptoms be your guide in answering your question. If you starting getting pain around eyes (forehead, temples), vision gets blurry or eyes just feel sore, then you/ve had too much. By cutting down light intensity wearing sunglasses, you might actually aggravate the situation by straining more to see what the sunglasses block out.

Dry eye: It is common for the eyes to become dry during prolonged tv or computer use. Try some artificial tears every 30 minutes or so to alleviate any feelings of dry eye such as foreign body sensation or burning/tearing. Take a break every 30 minutes to look at something far away out the window to reduce eye strain.

Two questions: Watching tv or using a computer does not hurt the eyes so there is no time limit. Your eyes will tend to get dry with extended use so use artificial tears as needed. Sunglasses block uv light so there are healthy for eye protection.
