Hypothyroidism: Removing the gland will always cause hypothyroidism. Even with careful efforts to spare the parathyroid glands, it is possible to develop hypo parathyroidism and have problems with low calcium (which causes tetany, severe muscle cramping, and heart problems).

Hypothyroidism : Hypothyroidism is the most common complication and Armour Thyroid is a good med. Also parathyroid gland damage can happen.

Depends: In experienced surgeon's hands the complications are minimal. For example my patients have a less than 1% incidence of hoarseness, infection or hematoma. The risk of permanent hypoparathyroidism is less than 1:1000 also in my hands.
