It depends: Growth plates injuries vary and are generally classified as types 1 to 5 on the salter-harris system. The severity and displacement of the injury would dictate the treatment. A broken growth plate will heal - trying to get it to heal without any deformity or growth retardation down the road is the concern. Any growth plate injury should be seen by your md and followed over several years.

Unusual at 38 y.o.: Growth plate fractures occurs in preadolescent, adolescent and teenage individuals before their growth plates close. They can be displaced or non displaced. Non displaced fractures are often treated with immobilization. Displaced fractures often require manipulation to reduce fracture and immobilization. The big concern with these fracture is that they can lead to altered growth of the bone.
